The Lost World in Sorrento, Italy

It happens when you lose your keys for the front door, you are looking for them and can’t find them. Turning everything upside down in the house, you’re almost getting desperate, but the keys are found in plain side.

Something similar happened this time. We were strolling in the crowded pedestrian center of the small Italian town Sorrento. When suddenly in the middle of the street we looked for a small fence, we saw a 30-meter canyon with vertical rocks and overgrowned ruined old buildings. Somewhere deep under the bridge the stream flowed, on which stood water mill – built in 1866. In this picture, which reminded me the illustation from Arthur Conan Doyle’s book “The Lost World”, only the small flying lizards were missing for completeness.

There are only walls of the water mill building, but they look very epic.

We decided to go down to the ruins of the old mill. At the botton of the gorge was unusually humid, it seemed to me that here its own microclimate was formed. It was really forgotten and lost world in the depths of the city. Dripping with sweat, we got through the dense jungle, what once was a trail strongly overgrown and we didn’t find here traces of human presence. Finally, on the bottom of a dried-up stream we went to the ruins of a mill.

Just now I noticed how quite is here, the fuss of the street has remained somewhere far above. Iron stairs to the second floor. I got up, but it wasn’t cozy enough there.   A bridge over the stream overgrown with ferns leads to carved in the rocks rising up trail, but we didn’t choose that way. We didn’t know in what condition the bridge was. The stream eas lost under the rock, hiding in the darkness of the tunnel. The bottom of the stream was lined with a hewn stones. The size of the tunnel was larger than we expected. The floor and ceiling were paved with with a stone, wriggling like a snake it lost in the darkness. After walking a few hundred meters, we saw that the light of the latern had ceased to reach the tunnel arch. We went out into the cave. Staircases were going upward to the streets of Sorrento and we were impressed by the grandeur of the place, which we had found by accident. When I got to the surface, I couldn’t get over it for a long time. I went to the Chernobyl zone illegally many times, there I saw a truly wild nature, wild horses and animals. But such a secret place like this one, which lurked under the city streets for the first time.

Where is the entrance to the lost world?
